In modern society women are bandied or branded by choice and may live in an old-fashioned marital home, status and lifestyle, but ultimately remain free. Please note the firing process of the barbed-wire allows for it's decay therefore allowing the sculpture to "become free" so there is a natural oxidization and flaking of the barbed wire.
